THEATRE & DANCE DEPARTMENT PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE - 2009 - 2010

2009
Fallen Angels
Delightfully naughty, scintillatingly charming, and characteristically sophisticated, this three-act high comedy of the 1920s is one of Noël Coward’s best. The story itself is not all that complicated, but in the hands of Coward, it provides a continuously amusing evening of insane hilarity. Julia and Jane, friends since they were girls, have been happily married to their husbands for five years. These BFFs (best friends forever) soon discover that Maurice, a French seducer who had affairs with both women prior to their marriages, is visiting London and requesting to see them both. While their husbands are conveniently gone for a day of golf, the women await Maurice’s arrival. In their nervous state, they quarrel, make up, get a bit tipsy on champagne, and unexpectedly face their husbands who have returned early from their outing. Meanwhile, Saunders, Julia’s new maid who has been everywhere and done absolutely everything, adds another layer of amusement to the already comical ‘state of affairs.’ Be sure to catch this fun weekend offering.

The Crucible
This American classic, written in 1953 during the McCarthy Era, is one of Arthur Miller’s most notable works. Guest director and former Dean of the School of the Arts, Larry Gorrell, leads this large energetic cast in the first SMU production of this powerful play. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, the story revolves around Reverend Samuel Paris and members of his household involved in allegedly practicing witchcraft during an era when individuals were tortured and put to death for mere insinuations of such involvement. This two-act drama explores how Americans respond to non-traditional and unconventional behavior and how it is so easy to turn our backs on those who differ from us. Also evident in this extraordinary work which is still relevant for today, is Miller’s perspective on the way the elders, religious leaders, and lawmakers handle the gripping situation. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the great plays of the twentieth century.

Talking With
…is eleven monologues for women. These extraordinary monologues received a standing ovation at Louisville’s Actors Theatre. Idiosyncratic characters amuse, move, and frighten, always speaking from the depths of their souls. They include a baton twirler, a fundamentalist snake handler, an ex-rodeo rider, a bag lady wish to live in McDonalds, and an actress willing to go to any length to get a job. It was the 1982 winner of the American Theatre Critics Association Award for Best Regional Play.
“A dramatist with an original voice…(and) gladsome humor.”-- N.Y. Times
“With Jane Martin the monologue has taken on a new poetic form, intensive in its method and revelatory in its impact.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

Please Note: This production has a live snake and a live cat in different scenes. We have rated the play as PG-13 because of adult language in one incident.
